DESCRIPTION:Outline\nEnglish as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and translanguaging r
esearch have fundamentally transformed the ways in\nwhich linguistic theor
y conceives of multilingual communication and language architecture. This
keynote\nexamines the conceptual contributions these complementary framewo
rks make to theoretical linguistics. While\nELF interrogates how speakers
utilize English across multilingual environments\, translanguaging demonst
rates\nthe integrated and fluid mobilization of the entirety of speakers
’ linguistic resources: a unified repertoire rather\nthan discrete lingu
istic codes. Together\, these perspectives challenge the native-speaker pa
radigm and reveal\nthe inherent creativity and systematicity that underpin
multilingual communication outside of monolingual\nnorms. Empirical data
from ELF and translanguaging elucidate patterns such as phonological reduc
 tion\,\nmorphosyntactic flexibility\, pragmatic negotiation strategies\, a
nd code-meshing phenomena that should be\nunderstood as signs of linguisti
c innovation\, not deviation. These insights urge a re-evaluation of found
 ational\nconstructs within linguistic theory\, including the competence-pe
rformance distinction\, the universal grammar\nhypothesis\, and modularist
models of bilingual cognition. By foregrounding authentic multilingual pr
actices\nover idealized monolingual grammars\, ELF and translanguaging app
roaches bridge the divide between core\ntheoretical linguistics and applie
d concerns\, providing methodological advancements for investigating langu
age\nchange\, cognitive processing\, and the real-time evolution of lingui
stic norms. This integrated paradigm calls for\ntheoretical models capable
of accounting for how vast populations creatively deploy their full lingu
 istic\nrepertoires.
