DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nRecent research on reading development has underscore
d the positive relationship between oral language skills\nand reading deve
 lopment (Saiegh-Haddad & Spolsky\, 2014). Therefore\, the goal of this pap
er is to illuminate\nthe dependency of reading on linguistic knowledge in
diglossic societies\, where the language or language variety\nthat is empl
oyed for daily interaction is not the formal written one (see e.g.\, Fergu
 son\, 1959\; Fishman\, 1967\;\nSaiegh-Haddad\, 2012). Such linguistic disc
repancies between what is mainly acquired as the mother tongue and\nused o
n a daily basis\, and what is learned later through formal schooling\, pos
e noteworthy challenges to literacy\ndevelopment for learners in these soc
ieties. Consequently\, this paper sheds light on insights from two special
\ncontexts that have been commonly described as diglossic in the socioling
uistic literature: (1) the Arab region\,\nwhere multiple spoken varieties
of Arabic coexist along with Modern Standard Arabic (the formal written\nv
ariety)\; and (2) Haiti\, where the majority of the population speaks Hait
ian Creole on a daily basis and where\nschooling\, especially literacy ins
truction\, occurs primarily in French. To this end\, based on our empirica
l data\nfrom both contexts\, we compare and describe differences and simil
arities in the findings regarding the\nrelationship between linguistic kno
wledge and reading ability in the two diglossic contexts in the paper\, id
 entify\npotential factors (linguistic\, cognitive\, and social/contextual)
that alter the way in which linguistic knowledge\npromotes reading abilit
y and vice versa\, and conclude with proposing a multilingual translanguag
ing perspective\n(MacSwan\, 2022) to support literacy development in such
 multilingual and multidialectal contexts.
