DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe study adopts the theoretical framework of Cultura
l Linguistics\, particularly the notion of cultural\nconceptualizations de
veloped by Farzad Sharifian. Cultural conceptualizations are understood as
shared\nculturally construed systems of meaning that shape and reflect ho
w members of cultural groups understand\nthe world around them and speak a
bout it. Cultural symbols are semiotic signs that members of a cultural\nc
ommunity attach specific meanings and emotions to based on shared values\,
beliefs\, and/or expectations.\nCultural symbols make these members think
and behave in certain ways\, and are often seen as defining a\nparticular
cultural group\, as\, for example\, flags are identified with certain nat
ions. Language as a symbolic\nsystem serves as a medium through which cult
ural symbols are expressed by simultaneously presenting\nsomething directl
y\, as frankincense is an aromatic type of resin\, and figuratively\, as w
hen frankincense\nbecomes a symbol of prayer in Orthodox Christianity. I a
m to discuss how cultural symbols could be\nanalyzed from the perspective
of Cultural Linguistics as both linguistic and conceptual resources that r
eflect\nshared cultural knowledge. I examine cultural symbols\, such as a
cross on top of a grave\, as manifestations\nof collective conceptual stru
ctures embedded in language\, discourse and multimodal communication\nprac
tices. The approach emphasizes qualitative analysis of how cultural symbol
s are multimodally\nconstructed and interpreted within specific cultural c
ontexts.\nI present 2 case studies: (1) cross as a cultural symbol in the
representation of mass media reporting of\nthe Izium tragedy in Ukraine in
2022\; and (2) Bat’kivshchyna Maty (Mother Land) monument as a cultural
\nsymbol in the representation in social media discourse. The analysis sho
ws how those cultural symbols work\nas condensed representations of cultur
ally shared knowledge\, values and experiences expressed verbally\nthrough
metaphorical language\, narratives and symbolic references and visually t
hrough indexical signs\,\nenabling the producers of messages to communicat
e complex cultural meanings. Understanding cultural\nsymbols requires exam
ining the interaction between language\, cultural cognition and discourse
practices.\nSuch a perspective contributes to broader discussions on how l
anguage reflects and shapes cultural\nknowledge within communicative pract
 ices
